Batak Baby with Batik

OK, it's not what you usually find when you go looking for 'batik' here in the US. In fact, I thought it wasn't real batik because it didn't have the tie-dyed look and wobbly outlines I associated with batik.
Turns out that 'batik' is fabric with gorgeous, exotic prints made with an ancient wax-resist method. To learn more about it than anyone in their right mind would want to know, visit http://www.discover-indo.tierranet.com/batikpag.htm.
You can buy 100 sarongs made of this fabric in Tomok and not buy the same print twice. I wish I had! (It's on my list of things to do when I go back.)

Hey, it is indeed BATIK. It's just not Batak BATIK.
Batik is the name for the Javanese textile. Batak is the ethnic group from North Sumatra (who are all Lutheran).
Batik is a wonderful art form which everyone should look out for. It is a textile that can be hung from the walls, worn on shirts and skirts, or placed as tablecloths. It is indeed an art form that is very special. Everyone should get some Batik and use it in home decorating!

OK -- but when you say "batik" here, people have a particular method of fabric-dying in mind. They are thinking of that tye-dyed-like or wax-resist look. This fabric has a much crisper dye method, with sharp outlines and precise color placement.
Quilters and fabric buffs make these fussy distinctions.
This baby was demonstrating a method for wearing a sarong. Clever little salesman, huh?
